Gene Roddenberry first offered the role to Lloyd Bridges, who had become famous as a scuba diver on TV’s Sea Hunt. When Bridges said no, Roddenberry approached Jack Lord, who had just starred for one year as a rodeo cowboy in Stoney Burke. Lord may have missed the boat … er, starship … by demanding too much money, but he ended up making a bundle anyway, playing super cop Steve McGarrett for twelve seasons on Hawaii Five-O.
