How did Star Trek really do in the ratings on NBC?

Picture
Typical of the night “Shore Leave” aired on NBC, Star Trek was the network's highest rated show. It also won its time slot. A.C. Nielsen said 31.4% of the TV sets running in America were tuned to Star Trek. The estimated audience was over 11,000,000 households. ABC’s top-rated series, Bewitched, came in second, with 30.7%, and CBS trailed with 28.7% for its hit series, My Three Sons. Star Trek’s audience share increased to 32.7% at 9 p.m. as ABC aired That Girl, down to 29%, and CBS drew 23.3% for the network’s Thursday Night Movie. 45 years of folklore about Star Trek is dispelled on nearly every page of These are the Voyages - TOS: Season One, on sale now. Watch for Season Two, arriving in early 2014.
